The action and human chain from Krümmel to Brunsbüttel , from the organizer KETTENreAKTION! called, was a protest against nuclear energy on April 24, 2010. It took place on the occasion of the 24th anniversary of the Chernobyl catastrophe two days later and against the background of the term extensions for nuclear power plants discussed in German politics .

Human chain and events

120,000 people demonstrated and formed a human chain on a 127 km stretch from the Krümmel nuclear power plant via Hamburg to the Brunsbüttel nuclear power plant . The participants traveled to 124 collection points in several special trains and around 240 buses from all over Germany, as well as from Austria, Poland and Italy. The largest special trains were those with the citizens' initiative Gundremmingen from Bavaria with 1,000 members and a special train from Berlin with 700 participants.

A program of speakers and music took place at seven locations along the route ( Glückstadt , Elmshorn , Uetersen , Pinneberg , Schenefeld , Hamburg and Geesthacht ). The artists included Jan Delay and Friends, Das Bo , DJ Mad , Microphone Mafia , Rantanplan , Dota and Abi Wallenstein . There were massive traffic problems at the main venues as the main roads were blocked by participants.

At the same time, around 10,000 opponents of nuclear power (according to the police, around 20,000 according to the organizers) surrounded the Hessian Biblis nuclear power plant and formed a 4 km long human chain around the facility. SPD state chairman Thorsten Schäfer-Gümbel , several SPD members of the state parliament and representatives of the Jusos, as well as the parliamentary group leader of the Greens, Tarek Al-Wazir , and eleven other members of the Greens took part in the event.

In addition, well-known artists called for the planned mass protests. The signatories of the appeal included the writers Sten Nadolny , Tilman Spengler and Günter Grass as well as the actresses Kristin Meyer , Eleonore Weisgerber , Andrea Sawatzki and Cosma Shiva Hagen . The musicians Udo Lindenberg , Max Mutzke , Jan Delay, Konstantin Wecker , the actors Wolfgang Völz , Günter Lamprecht and Hannes Jaenicke , the filmmakers Pepe Danquart and Rolf Schübel , the television presenter and author Sarah Kuttner signed the appeal.

A human chain of the same size was the last protest on October 22, 1983 against retrofitting in the NATO member states with 200,000 participants over a length of 108 km between Stuttgart and Neu-Ulm .

Some ecologically oriented companies are said to have sponsored buses and special trains, Lauenburg FDP member of the Bundestag Christel Happach-Kazan criticized : "The fundamental right to freedom of demonstration must not be instrumentalized by PR strategists of state-funded eco-corporations as a marketing instrument."
