Monaco-Ville ( Monegasque Munegu-Vila ) is the oldest and, with 975 inhabitants (2008), the smallest urban district ( French quarter ) in the Principality of Monaco . It covers an area of 0.2 square kilometers (19.65 hectares) and borders the Monegasque boroughs of Fontvieille and La Condamine .

Monaco-Ville is historically a fortified old city, parts of the fortifications are still visible today. Until 1917 Monaco-Ville was a separate municipality ( commune ) within the principality and is now also known as the old town or by the locals as le Rocher . It lies on a rocky peninsula that juts 60 meters out of the Mediterranean Sea between the two ports of Monaco, Port Hercule ( La Condamine district ) in the north and Port de Fontvieille ( Fontvieille district ) in the southwest.

In Monaco-Ville is among other things the Prince's Palace of the Grimaldis . The city district is therefore referred to by many sources as the capital of the principality. However, the separation between city and state is purely theoretical. Every day the changing of the guard takes place in front of the palace at 11:55 a.m.

There is also the world-famous Oceanographic Museum , which was once headed by Jacques-Yves Cousteau , and the Notre-Dame-Immaculée cathedral .
