Attack in New York on October 31, 2017
The attack in New York on October 31, 2017 was carried out with a pickup truck at 3:30 p.m. local time (GMT-4) . A man with a rented Ford F-250 pickup ran over numerous people on the bike path in Hudson River Park on the West Side Highway of New York City . Eight people (five Argentinians, two Americans and one Belgian) died. One day after the attack, nine people were injured in the hospital; four of them were seriously injured.
The collision with a school bus brought the pick-up to a halt, whereupon the terrorist got out with a paintball marker modeled on real weapons and an air rifle . An NYPD officer shot him and hit him in the stomach. He was taken to a hospital and operated on and survived. A handwritten letter of confession was found in the pick-up. Handwritten documents expressing sympathy for the terrorist organization Islamic State were found at the scene . The assassin told investigators that he was inspired to the act by IS videos and that the planning had already started a year in advance.
The annual Halloween parade with around two million visitors then took place as planned under strong police protection.
The man who was shot and seriously suspected is a 29-year-old named Sayfullo Saipov. He is Uzbek and came to the USA in 2010 on a Diversity Immigrant Visa . Saipov is married; he has two daughters and a son born in 2017. At the hospital, he said he felt fine after the crime and expressed a desire to hang an IS flag in the hospital room.
New York Mayor Bill de Blasio called the act a "cowardly act of terror". New Yorkers wouldn't be intimidated.
