- Colombo / Sri Lanka : A suicide attack by the Tamil paramilitary organization LTTE on Sri Lanka's President Ranasinghe Premadasa kills 25. One of them is the president, who was on his way to a May rally .
- Halle / Germany : The youth radio DT64 is saved. The public broadcaster MDR leads it as MDR Sputnik on. For years there was a dispute about the continued existence of the station founded in the GDR in 1986 . a. the Junge Union , the station RIAS , DJ WestBam and punk rock - band Abstürzende pigeons involved.

- Bonn / Germany : Björn Engholm ( SPD ), Prime Minister of Schleswig-Holstein , appears before the press and announces the resignation of his offices. The confessions of those involved in the Barschel affair have confirmed in recent months that Engholm partially lied to the public in 1987 during the affair.
- New York / United States : An expert opinion by the United Nations reveals human rights violations and violations of the Geneva Conventions during the armed conflict over the future of Yugoslavia . The United Nations Security Council will now consider the pros and cons of a tribunal for the crumbling country.

- Andorra la Vella / Andorra : The 468 km² large Lehn -Fürstentum get on the road to national independence its first constitution . It was adopted in the referendum on March 14th and finalized on April 28th. It is planned to sign friendship treaties with France and Spain in the coming month . With these signatures independence would be complete.
- Hamburg / Germany : The Hamburg Constitutional Court declares the result of the 1991 state election in Hamburg to be invalid, as the CDU did not use a democratic procedure to fill the places on its party list before the election . The court stated: "Without the blessing of the party superiors, an applicant had no chance of a place on the list."

- Lübeck / Germany : The city of Lübeck inaugurates the Heinrich and Thomas Mann Center at Mengstrasse 4. The house is the residence of the fictional Buddenbrook family in the novel Buddenbrooks by Thomas Mann from 1901 and is now called " Buddenbrookhaus ".
- New York / United States : The Security Council of the United Nations in its (UN) decides Resolution 824 creating UN safe zones for refugees in Bihac , Gorazde , Sarajevo , Srebrenica , Tuzla and Žepa in Bosnia and Herzegovina . In order to provide the refugees with the necessary protection, the Security Council supports the expansion of the UNPROFOR mission .

- Banja Luka / Bosnia and Herzegovina : Ethnic Serbs attack the Arnaudija and Ferhadija mosques . Then the authorities of the Republika Srpska organize the demolition of the entire Ferhadija complex.
- Unterföhring / Germany : The TV station Premiere is broadcasting the 0137 Night Talk as an unencrypted TV program for the first time. It is one of the first interactive call-in programs on German television.

- Paradise / United States : The British WBC heavyweight boxing world champion Lennox Lewis will defend his title for the first time since he was named world champion in December 1992 and defeated his American challenger Tony Tucker on a point basis .

- Dakar / Senegal : In the election for the National Assembly , the Parti Socialiste of President Abdou Diouf , who was re-elected in February, will be the strongest party with 56.6%, five years earlier its result was around 71%.

- Bishkek / Kyrgyzstan : The National Bank issues the first banknotes for the new currency of Kyrgyzstan, Som . It replaces the ruble from the Soviet era .
- Nakhon Pathom / Thailand : 188 people die and around 470 are injured in a fire in a toy factory that mainly produces for US companies.

- Cayenne / French Guiana : The broadcast satellite Astra 1C of the holding company SES Astra is by a rocket -type Ariane 42L in the orbit brought. The satellite is expected to broadcast programs from German TV stations from July onwards . a. WDR and BR .

- Millstreet / Ireland : Niamh Kavanagh wins the final in the 38th Grand Prix Eurovision de la Chanson for Ireland in the Green Glens Arena . With 25 acts , the competition in the finals was greater than ever.
- Neuilly-sur-Seine / France : The Recherche Assistance Intervention Dissuasion (RAID), a unit of the French National Police to combat terrorism, first became known to the general public when it killed the student Eric Schmitt. Equipped with explosives, Schmitt took hostages at his school.

- Ankara / Turkey : The Grand National Assembly elects Prime Minister Süleyman Demirel from the Right Way Party as the new President . His predecessor Turgut Özal died in April. The office of Prime Minister will be passed from Demirel to Erdal İnönü from the Social Democratic Party .
- Frankfurt am Main / Germany : The German Sports Association recognizes the American Football Association Germany .
- Cologne / Germany : For the cycle race around Cologne, Thomas Baumgärtel sprinkles a large, yellow cloth with 3,333 black graffiti bananas and drapes it over the sculpture of stationary traffic . The installation art on art serves as a podium for 22 triathletes during the cycle race , who pedal there on four fixed bicycles.
- Maria Enzersdorf / Austria : The Hypo Südstadt team defends its title as the best women's handball team in Europe. In the final second leg of the European Cup , the team wins 40:25 against Vasas Budapest .
- Vienna / Austria : In the election for the Lower Austrian state parliament , 44.2% of the voters vote for the ÖVP state organization People's Party of Lower Austria . The SPÖ with 33.9%, the FPÖ with 12.1% and the Liberal Forum with 5.1% of the vote are also moving into the country house in Herrengasse .

- Caracas / Venezuela : One day after the resignation of President Carlos Andrés Pérez ( Acción Democrática ), one of Pérez's party colleagues, President Octavio Lepage, will take over his office until a legitimate successor is elected. Pérez is said to have embezzled $ 17 million from the state budget.
- Northern Hemisphere : A partial solar eclipse can be observed from the entire Arctic Ocean , all of Greenland and large parts of North America and Northern Eurasia . In Germany only the part north of a line from Emden to Görlitz is in the visibility area.

- Cannes / France : The film Das Piano by New Zealand director Jane Campion and the film Farewell, My Concubine by Chinese director Chen Kaige are awarded the Palme d'or at the 46th International Film Festival .
- Guadalajara , Mexico : A gun attack kills seven people at the city's airport , including Cardinal Juan Jesús Posadas Ocampo , who is hit by 14 bullets. During his lifetime, he spoke out vehemently against the organized crime in connection with drug trafficking from.

- Solingen / Germany : Four young people from the right-wing extremist scene carry out an arson attack on the residential building of the Turkish family of Durmus and Mevlüde Genç in their neighborhood . Five women and girls are killed in the act, making the attack the most momentous outbreak of violence against migrants or their descendants since the founding of the Federal Republic of Germany.
