- Tembisa / South Africa : 30 people die in an attack in the Tembisa township near Johannesburg . The violence between township residents and guest workers of the Zulu ethnic group spreads to the neighboring towns of Thokoza and Phola Park, where another 14 people die.
- Völklingen / Germany : Against the Saarstahl AG which is bankruptcy proceedings initiated.
- Zadar / Croatia : During the Croatian war, fighting between Serbs and the Croatian armed forces intensifies in the west of the country . The Croatians give u. a. their positions at the airport near Zadar and at the Maslencia Bridge.

- Coquelles / France , Folkestone / UK : As a protective measure in connection with the first tunnel under the English Channel in history , by its release UK conservative opinion Britons will lose in the coming year its status as an island, which occurs Agreement Sangatte into force, the British side is entitled to early border controls on French soil.

- Taejŏn / South Korea : The international special exhibition "Expo 93" of the Bureau International des Expositions with 108 participating countries opens. It stands under the slogan " Sustainable Development ".
Friday 13th August 1993
- Havana / Cuba : Possessing and paying in foreign currencies is now free of punishment. The background to this is the increasing flow of US dollars to Cuba from compatriots who have emigrated to the United States and the economic hardship among the population. The Children's Fund of the United Nations noted in the latest annual report that 50% of Cuban children in the first years of life, the lack of nutritional symptom anemia show.
- Stuttgart / Germany : The 1993 World Athletics Championships are opened. The former Neckar Stadium was given a full roof in advance.

- Duisburg / Germany : In the steel works of Hütten- und Bergwerke Rheinhausen AG (HBR) , a Fried. Krupp AG Hoesch-Krupp , the last shift is run before the shutdown. In their prime, the plants employed around 16,000 people.

- Lucerne / Switzerland : The Chapel Bridge , the most important landmark of the city built around 1300 , burns down to a large extent.

- Pasadena / United States : The space agency NASA loses contact with the space probe Mars Observer , which was near Mars ' orbit at the last signal . A search signal is sent from California every 20 minutes, but the missile does not respond. NASA last lost a planetary probe in 1971.

- Stuttgart / Germany : In Baden-Württemberg's state capital who go fourth World Athletics Championships the IAAF over. The German Athletics Federation has lost only two gold medals in touch with the world leaders, the United States as a successful nation three times gold. Werner Günthör won gold for Switzerland in the shot put and Sigrid Kirchmann bronze for Austria in the high jump .

- Beledweyne , Mogadishu / Somalia : specialists of the Army Rangers of the United States Armed Forces land in the context of the UN - Operation in Somalia number II in six aircraft of the type Lockheed C-5 Galaxy in the capital Mogadishu and are intended to bring about a turning point in the ongoing struggle happening here. In the meantime, the units of the German Support Association have reached their location in Beledweyne after a month's journey and are almost ready for action.
