Coquelles ( Dutch Kalkwelle ) is a French municipality with 137 inhabitants (1 January 2017) in the department of Pas-de-Calais in the region of Hauts-de-France . It belongs to the canton of Calais-1 and to the community association Communauté d'agglomération du Calaisis .

Entering the Eurotunnel near Coquelles

The municipality of Coquelles is located between Calais in the northeast and Cap Blanc-Nez in the southwest on the English Channel coast .

Near Coquelles is the entrance and the terminal for Euro Tunnel . This is where vehicles for transport to and from Great Britain are loaded onto the Eurotunnel Shuttle .

In the village you can see an old windmill, the ruins of a castle and the remains of a church from the twelfth century.

Coquelles Field Airfield

During the Second World War, there was a field airfield of the German Air Force to the east of the place where the tunnel terminal is today . In the course of the Battle of Britain in 1940, it was one of the bases of Jagdgeschwader 52 (JG 52) equipped with Bf 109E .
