Sainte-Marie-Kerque ( Dutch : Sint-Mariakerke ) is a French municipality with 1648 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Pas-de-Calais in the region of Hauts-de-France . It has belonged to the Arrondissement of Calais (previously Saint-Omer ) and the canton of Marck since 2017 .

The closest localities are Saint-Pierre-Brouck (ndl .: "Sint Pieterbroek") (approx. 3.6 km as the crow flies) and the canton capital Audruicq (ndl .: "Ouderwijk") (approx. 4.6 km). The coastal town of Calais (ndl .: "Kales"), seat of the prefecture , is 20 km as the crow flies.
history
The municipality is located in the French part of Flanders and belongs to the historically Dutch- speaking area of French Flanders , which in the Middle Ages extended to the west of Calais , which can still be recognized today by the place names ( Kerque or Kerke (Flemish) = church) and many surnames of the residents . However, since the early modern period, French has steadily gained ground in the region at the expense of Dutch. In the Middle Ages, the place shared the fate of the County of Flanders .
