Sainte-Marie-Kerque ( Dutch : Sint-Mariakerke ) is a French municipality with 1648 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Pas-de-Calais in the region of Hauts-de-France . It has belonged to the Arrondissement of Calais (previously Saint-Omer ) and the canton of Marck since 2017 .

history

The municipality is located in the French part of Flanders and belongs to the historically Dutch- speaking area of French Flanders , which in the Middle Ages extended to the west of Calais , which can still be recognized today by the place names ( Kerque or Kerke (Flemish) = church) and many surnames of the residents .
