  • Asmara / Ethiopia : In the referendum on the independence of the Eritrean part of Ethiopia, over a million voters are in favor of Eritrean independence and around 2,000 are against. The government of Ethiopia approved the voting.
  • Moscow / Russia : The referendum on the government's economic policy pushed through by President Boris Yeltsin in the wake of the constitutional crisis is adopted with 58.1% of the votes. While the majority of parliamentarians show aversion to market economy reforms, Yeltsin praises them as an opportunity for Russia.
