Friday 1st January 1993
- Bern / Switzerland : The SVP politician Adolf Ogi takes over the office of Federal President .
- Bratislava / Slovakia , Prague / Czech Republic : The states of Slovakia and the Czech Republic emerge as their successor states after the dissolution of the Czech and Slovak Federal Republic (CSFR). While Slovakia does not yet have a national flag, the Czech Republic continues to use the CSFR tricolor.
- Brussels / Belgium : The Maastricht Treaty comes into force and transforms the member states of the " European Communities " into member states of the " European Union " (EU). At the same time, the “ European Economic Community ” becomes the “ European Community ” (EC). The EU internal market is complete. It guarantees free movement of goods , free movement of persons , freedom to provide services and free movement of capital and payments .
- Copenhagen / Denmark : Denmark takes over the Presidency of the Council of the European Union from the United Kingdom . As in 1987, the post of Prime Minister of the European Community was given to Poul Schlueter .
- Munich / Germany : The private broadcaster Kirch-Gruppe starts broadcasting the television station Deutsches Sportfernsehen (DSF). The specialty channel takes over the cable frequency from Tele 5 .
- New York / United States : Brazil , Djibouti , New Zealand , Pakistan and Spain are new non-permanent members of the Security Council of the United Nations .
Sunday 3rd January 1993
- Bonn / Germany : The German Vice Chancellor and Federal Minister of Economics Jürgen Möllemann ( FDP ) resigns from his ministerial office because of the unauthorized use of official forms in favor of a friend in the letterhead affair .
- Moscow / Russia : George Bush for the USA and Boris Yeltsin for the Russian Federation sign the START II treaty . The disarmament agreement commits both countries to a gradual reduction of strategic delivery systems for nuclear weapons .
- United States : Various local TV channels are broadcasting the first episode of the new TV series Star Trek: Deep Space Nine .
- Washington, DC / United States : Brockman Adams ( Democrat ), who sits in the US Senate for Washington State , resigns from office over the sexual harassment and rape scandal in one case. Eight of the women affected wrote a statement in 1992 with corresponding allegations. Most of them are former Adams employees.
Monday 4th January 1993
- Bratislava / Slovakia : Radio Slovakia International , the foreign service of the Slovak state broadcaster , goes on air three days after it was founded.
- London / United Kingdom : The business newspaper Financial Times is appearing on the centenary of the year, this time on white paper after the consistent use of salmon-colored paper.

- Bischofshofen / Austria : The Austrian Andreas Goldberger wins the 41st Four Hills Tournament ahead of the Japanese Noriaki Kasai .
Thursday January 7th 1993
- Antarctica : The Norwegian Erling Kagge completes the first unsupported solo expedition to the South Pole . He covered the 1,310 km route in 51 days.
Friday January 8th 1993
- New York / United States : The Security Council of the United Nations recommended in Resolution 800 , the inclusion of Slovakia and in Resolution 801 , the inclusion of the Czech Republic in the international community.
- Sarajevo / Bosnia and Herzegovina : Bosnian Serbs stop a UN convoy guarded by French soldiers of the United Nations Protection Force (UNPROFOR) with the Bosnian Vice Prime Minister Hakija Turajlić , who is on the way from Sarajevo Airport to the seat of government. Shortly afterwards, he is shot in his car.

- Prévessin-Moëns / France : Jean-Claude Romand , who so far wrongly posed as a doctor, buys a pistol, a silencer and a gasoline canister and begins a series of murders.
- Shanghai / China : The Shanghai Pudong Development Bank is founded. The CPC declared the Shanghai Pudong District on Huangpu Island a special economic regulation zone in October 1992 .

- Bucharest / Romania : The Romanian Football Association suspended the goalkeeper of the national team Florin Prunea for nine months because he led a group of around 100 players who protested against late salary payments and called for the resignation of association president Dumitru Dragomir.
Monday January 11, 1993
- Kirkenes / Norway : Finland , Norway, Russia and Sweden sign a formal cooperation agreement in the northern polar Barents Sea . The so-called Barents Cooperation comprises three levels: the Euro-Arctic Barents Sea Council, the Interregional Barents Regional Council and the working group of the indigenous peoples of the Barents region.
- New York / United States : The TV channel USA Network radiates the first episode of Wrestling -Show WWE Raw from. The show is geared towards commercial success down to the last detail, e.g. B. by offering pay-per-view . Therefore, their fate is also closely followed by other media providers.

- Berlin / Germany : The trial of Erich Honecker , the former General Secretary of the Central Committee of the SED and chairman of the State Council of the German Democratic Republic (GDR), which joined the Federal Republic of Germany in 1990 , before the 27th criminal chamber of the Regional Court is suspended because of the defendant's state of health. The incitement to murder citizens of the GDR while trying to cross the inner-German border was negotiated .

- Berlin / Germany : The country Berlin dismisses the long-standing de facto - Prime Minister of the German Democratic Republic Erich Honecker from the prison . The case was closed yesterday.
- Bonn / Germany : The Bundestag passes an amendment to the Basic Law , which removes the unconstitutionality of the worldwide deployment of the Bundeswehr .

- Antarctica : Anne Dal Vera , Ann Bancroft , Sunniva Sorby and Sue Giller are the first women's team to reach the geographic South Pole on skis . They are among the first 30 people to cross the South Pole on skis and sleds.
- Nariño / Colombia : The Galeras volcano erupts unexpectedly and kills nine members of a research group that is currently on the summit.
- Baltic Sea : The Polish RoRo railway ferry Jan Heweliusz on the Oceaniczne line sinks on the way from Świnoujście (Swinoujscie) to Ystad off the coast of the island of Rügen in the Verena storm at wind speeds of around 160 km / h. The hurricane causes waves up to 4 m high.
Friday 15th January 1993
- Palermo / Italy : Salvatore "Totò" Riina , also known as "La Belva" ( German "the beast" ), is arrested after years of fleeing. The arrest of the well-known leader of the Sicilian Mafia is also attributed to the fact that the murders of the popular judges Paolo Borsellino and Giovanni Falcone created great public pressure on politicians to finally take action against the Mafia more effectively.

- Florence / Italy : Pietro Pacciani is arrested as the main suspect in the “ Monster of Florence ”, a series of double murders. The wanted perpetrator has been linked to eight double murders.

- New York / United States : In accordance with the resolutions 800 and 801 of the Security Council of the United Nations (UN) fits the UN General Assembly the inclusion of the Slovak Republic and the Czech Republic to the States in alliance.

- Washington, DC / United States : Bill Clinton ( Democrat ) is sworn in to succeed George Bush ( Republican ) as President of the United States . Clinton defeated Bush in the November 3, 1992 election by a clear margin.
Thursday January 21, 1993
- Bonn / Germany : The Minister for Foreign Affairs Klaus Kinkel ( FDP ) inherits his party colleague Jürgen Möllemann as Vice Chancellor of the Federal Republic. At the same time, FDP politician Günter Rexrodt is appointed as the new Federal Minister of Economics .
- Germany : The anti- war film Stalingrad hits the cinemas. It deals with the Battle of Stalingrad from late 1942 to early 1943 during World War II from the perspective of a German Sturmpionier battalion.
- Sofia / Bulgaria : Darik Radio , the first private radio broadcaster with a national license, will start broadcasting its program at 12 noon.

- Bærum / Norway : The airline Norwegian Air Shuttle is founded and initially takes over regional flights for the airline Braathens .
- Zadar / Croatia : In the Croatian war , the Croatian army begins Operation Maslenica , an offensive against Serbian troops in Dalmatia.

- Beverly Hills / United States : In the 50th ceremony of the Golden Globe Awards , the actor wins Al Pacino in the category Best Actor (Drama) in a movie . Emma Thompson is named Best Actress and Lauren Bacall is given the Lifetime Achievement Award .
- Vienna / Austria : In response to the popular initiative “Austria first” initiated by the FPÖ , which was signed by 416,531 people and thus 7.35% of those eligible to vote, between 250,000 and 300,000 people took part in the “ Sea of Lights ” campaign, to which the Human rights organization SOS Mitmensch called.
