Mevlüde Genç (* 1943 in Turkey ) is a German citizen of Turkish origin who lost two daughters, two granddaughters and a niece in the 1993 murder in Solingen .

Her place of origin Mercimek in the Turkish province of Amasya , after which a square in Solingen is named, Genç left at the age of 27. "I live in Germany, so I want to be German," said Genç, explaining her step to take on German citizenship after the right-wing extremist act . In 1996 she was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon for her efforts to achieve reconciliation after the attack .

In February 2012, Mevlüde Genç was elected to the 15th Federal Assembly by the North Rhine-Westphalian state parliament at the suggestion of the CDU parliamentary group, in which she took part on March 18, 2012.

In 2015 she was awarded the Order of Merit of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia .

Mevlüde Genç Medal

The state government of North Rhine-Westphalia has donated on December 18, 2018 special contributions to tolerance, reconciliation between cultures and to the peaceful coexistence of religions "Mevlüde-Genç Medal". The award is given to individuals or groups. The medal is usually awarded annually by the Prime Minister and is endowed with 10,000 euros. The prize and thus the prize money can be shared. Genç's media presence led to envy and resentment in parts of Solingen society.
