Zhou Youguang ( Chinese  周有光 , Pinyin Zhōu Yǒuguāng ; actually 周耀平 , Zhōu Yàopíng ; born January 13, 1906 in Changzhou ; † January 14, 2017 in Beijing ) was a Chinese economist and linguist who, with Pinyin, was the official transcription of Chinese in Latin has developed.

Life

Zhou Youguang studied economics and linguistics at Saint John's University in Shanghai from 1923 . In 1925 he left the university during the May 30th Movement and continued his studies at the Eastern China Pedagogical University , which is also in Shanghai, until 1927 .

As a representative of a Chinese bank, Zhou lived in New York City from 1946 to 1949 . From 1949 to 1955 he taught as a professor of economics at Fudan University in Shanghai, while also attending lectures in linguistics . From 1956 to 1988 he was a member of the Chinese Font Reform Committee. During the Cultural Revolution of 1966, he was sent to a labor camp for two years from 1969. He is the inventor of pinyin , the official transcription of Chinese into Latin script.

On January 13, 2016, Zhou celebrated his 110th birthday. He was married to Zhang Yunhe from 1933 until her death in 2002, with whom he had two children. He died the day after his 111th birthday.
