Jake LaMotta , also known as The Bronx Bull and The Raging Bull (born July 10, 1922 in New York - † September 19, 2017 in Aventura , Florida ; actually Giacobbe LaMotta ) was an American boxer. The Italian American was world middleweight champion from 1949 to 1951.

LaMotta was a typical pressure fighter with a legendary chin. The Ring Magazine chose him as the best boxer with rugged qualities of the story. In 1990 LaMotta was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame .

Life

Career

LaMotta lost on the instructions of the Mafia the fight in November 1947 against Billy Fox, on whom the Mafia had bet, what later made the world championship fight possible for him. He won the title in a fight against the highly favored French Marcel Cerdan on June 16, 1949 in Detroit by knockout in the tenth round. Cerdan had dislocated his shoulder early and had to give up. Before there could be a rematch, Cerdan died in a plane crash on Monte Redondo .

After LaMotta had great difficulties defending his title against the French Laurent Dauthille, he managed a knockout in the very last round. On February 14, 1951, he finally lost the title in Chicago by breaking off in the 13th round to Sugar Ray Robinson .

He fought a total of six fights against his arch-rival Robinson, but could only win once, on February 5, 1943 in Detroit . It was also Robinson's first ever defeat. At that time, however, Robinson was still a welterweight, while LaMotta was a middleweight.

family

As of 2014, LaMotta was married to Denise Baker for the seventh time. Daughter Christi and sons Jake Jr. and Joe, both of whom died in 1998, are from his second marriage to Vikki. Daughter Stephanie comes from his fourth marriage to Dimitria. He had two other daughters. He was the uncle of the actor John LaMotta .

LaMotta has proven to be successful as a personal advisor to De Niro, which ended with De Niro receiving an Oscar for his convincing performance.
