Khorschid railway accident
The Khorschid railway accident was a rear-end collision on August 11, 2017 between two passenger trains near the station of Khorschid , a suburb of the Egyptian metropolis of Alexandria .
Starting position
The first train was from Port Said to Alexandria, the next one from Cairo to Alexandria. Both trains carried only 3rd class cars ("coach class").
the accident
The train ahead came to a halt due to a technical defect. It is said to have been secured to the rear by a “stop” signal . The engine driver of the following train coming from Cairo ran over the signal and hit the end of the broken train.
consequences
At least 42 people died and 123 were injured. The hospitals in Alexandria declared a state of emergency.
The engine driver of the driven train and his assistant survived and were arrested, as was the engine driver and the assistant of the broken-down train. The locomotive driver of the driven train is accused of having run over the signal showing "Halt".
On August 13, 2017, the director of the Egyptian Railway Authority , Major General Medhat Shusha, resigned as a result of the accident .
