from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The bomb attack in Kabul on May 31, 2017 , at 8:25 a.m. (local time), took place in the Wasir Akbar Chan diplomatic district of Kabul , Afghanistan , which is also home to the Presidential Palace and the Foreign Ministry. At least 150 people were killed and more than 400 injured in the attack, including members of the German embassy.

Sequence of events

A sewage tank truck prepared with an estimated 1500 kg of explosives detonated in front of a checkpoint near Sanbak Square in the 10th district. The embassies of Bulgaria , Germany , France , India , Japan , Turkey and the United Arab Emirates as well as the NATO headquarters suffered massive damage . More than 50 vehicles were destroyed or damaged.

Perpetrator

The background to the attack is still unclear. The Taliban distanced themselves from the attack and said it was not their work. In Kabul military circles, it was suspected that the Haqqani network could be behind the attack. The network under the leader Sirajuddin Haqqani is closely linked to the Taliban.

Victim

On the afternoon of the day of the attack, Sedik Seddiki , a spokesman for the Afghan government, named 49 dead and 319 injured. The numbers mentioned later increased increasingly.

Reactions

The President of Afghanistan, Ashraf Ghani , condemned the attack as a "crime against humanity".

The German government canceled a deportation flight that should have started in the evening to Kabul. The reason for the rejection was that the embassy staff were not available. Human rights organizations in Germany and politicians from Bündnis90 / Die Grünen and the Left have called for a complete stop to deportations to Afghanistan, which only applies to Syria in Germany. On June 1, at a meeting between Angela Merkel and the heads of government of the federal states, it was decided to initially only deport criminals to Afghanistan. A new assessment of the situation should be made by the local embassy by July to determine whether deportations are possible.

The German Society for International Cooperation was after the attack almost their entire German and international staff from Afghanistan fly out.
