Starting position

In the state elections in 2013 , the Christian Social Fatherland Union (VU) of Prime Minister Klaus Tschütscher lost 14 percentage points. The other major party, the liberal-conservative Progressive Citizens' Party (FBP) , which is also part of the government, also lost 3.5 percentage points. The majority of the votes went to the new party The Independent (DU) (15.3%) of the former VU MP Harry Quaderer . The Green Social Democratic Free List was also able to gain easily. The coalition of VU and FBP, which had existed since 2005, was continued in 2013, although the FBP now provided the head of government with Adrian Hasler .

Electoral system

Elections were made in two constituencies , with the Oberland having 15 MPs and the Unterland 10 MPs. There was an 8% threshold nationwide.

Every voter could vote on election day between 10:30 and 12:00. However, almost 96% of voters made use of the postal vote . Each voter could vote for as many candidates as his constituency has MPs. To do this, he had to use the ballot of one party and could delete candidates there as well as add candidates from other parties.

Parties and candidates

As in 2013, four parties ran for elections in 2017. The incumbent Prime Minister Adrian Hasler ran again for the FBP . According to tradition, however, he did not stand for election to the state parliament, neither did Government Councilor Aurelia Frick and Councilor Mauro Pedrazzini . For the post of head of government, the VU nominated the previous vice-head of government Thomas Zwiefelhofer . She also nominated Dominique Gantenbein and Daniel Risch . As is customary in Liechtenstein, none of them ran for the state parliament. The free list went to the election with the doctor Ecki Hermann as a candidate for the office of head of government. Hermann did not run for the state parliament, however. The DU had refrained from nominating candidates for the government.

A total of 71 candidates ran for the 25 seats. Only VU entered with a maximum of 25 candidates. The FBP put 22 candidates, the independents 15, the Free List 8 candidates.

The election result was a disappointment for the women. Of the 19 female candidates, only 3 made it to the state parliament (15.8%), while 22 of the 52 male candidates were elected (42.3%). In addition, two women MPs who stood for re-election missed re-election. In the by-election survey, two-thirds of voters across all parties said they had not made sure to vote for women. Only a third of those questioned had consciously preferred women. The discussions about the reasons for the poor performance of the candidates and about suitable measures to increase the proportion of women in the state parliament are ongoing. The hoi quote , the association for a gender quota in Liechtenstein, was founded in March 2017 .

After the election

After losses for the larger of the two governing parties and a strengthening of the two opposition forces, the governing coalition of FBP and VU will continue. The three previous members of the FBP government remain in office, while two new party members join the government for VU.
