State election in Liechtenstein in 1989
The state election in Liechtenstein in 1989 took place on March 5, 1989 and was an early election of the legislature of the Principality of Liechtenstein. All 25 members of the Landtag of the Principality of Liechtenstein were elected by the people of the country in the two constituencies of the Oberland and Unterland. The special thing about this election was that it was the first time that the Liechtenstein Parliament consisted of 25 members. It was only in 1988 that the number had increased from 15 to 25. However, the relationship between the members of the two constituencies remained unaffected. Instead of nine deputies, fifteen came from the Oberland; the Unterland sent ten to Parliament.
Starting position
In the state elections in February 1986 , the Progressive Citizens' Party in Liechtenstein received 42.75%, the Fatherland Union 50.19% and the Free List 7.06% of the votes cast. The election was preceded by the so-called "State Court affair". The FBP called for a parliamentary commission of inquiry into the strange events surrounding the Kunsthaus, which had already taken place five years ago. The VU as the majority party did not agree to this matter, whereupon the MPs of the FBP left the state chamber and made the legislature incapable of acting. With the power of attorney from the Hereditary Prince Hans-Adam, Prime Minister Hans Brunhart dissolved the state parliament. There were new elections.
