Underwater - Es ist erwacht (original title Underwater ) is a science fiction action thriller by William Eubank , which was released in German cinemas on January 9, 2020 and the following day in US cinemas.

action

The Kepler 822 station - a research and drilling facility operated by Tian Industries at the bottom of the Mariana Trench - is hit by a powerful earthquake . While part of the facility is destroyed by the blast, mechanical engineer Norah Price and her colleagues Rodrigo and Paul are able to escape to the escape pod dock . But the three of them only find Captain Lucien when they arrive. The rest of the crew used all the escape pods so that none were left.

Together they reach the control room and meet the biologist Emily Haversham and the engineer Liam Smith, who try unsuccessfully to make contact with the surface. Lucien suggests using pressure suits to walk a mile across the ocean floor to Roebuck Station and from there to the surface. As they descend in the freight elevator, Rodrigo's helmet turns out to be defective and implodes under the water pressure . Once at the bottom, the group sees a distress signal from one of the escape pods, and Smith and Paul go to check. When they reach the place, they find a corpse from whose back a humanoid creature suddenly jumps out and attacks them. Smith kills the creature and takes it with him. Haversham examines it and finds that it belongs to a previously undiscovered species.

The five make their way to the Roebuck station, but then the Kepler station explodes and almost buries them under the rubble . Smith is hit, but Price and Lucien save him. They manage to get through an access tunnel to the intermediate station, where they can charge and clean their suits. They discover that Smith's oxygen source is badly damaged by the debris. On the way through the access tunnel to the further base, Paul is attacked by another creature, dragged underwater and killed.

Before the team leaves the access tunnel, they must determine that Smith's oxygen battery is damaged and he will be choked on toxic fumes. But Price, Lucien and Haversham don't want to leave any crew member behind and find a solution. The four set out on the ocean floor, but one of the creatures appears and pulls Smith into a cave. Lucien manages to get Smith out, but is pulled away from the others by the creature himself. Price follows them and can free Lucien, but Lucien sacrifices himself so that Price is spared from the increasing pressure change and does not come into dangerously fast decompression .

Price ends up in the abandoned Sheppard station and learns that Lucien previously worked there. She tries to contact Smith and Haversham, but to no avail. She puts on a new suit and leaves Sheppard Station to go to Roebuck Station. On the ocean floor, she catches up with Haversham and Smith. Together they drag Smith on and reach Roebuck Station, but the entrance is blocked by the creatures' nests. Price tries to sneak past them, but Haversham's deoxygenated suit emits signal noises, causing one of the creatures to wake up and attack Price. It is partially swallowed by the creature, but it can kill it and break free.

Eventually the three reach the dock with the escape pods, but Price discovers that only two of them work. Price and Emily manage to put the injured Liam in a capsule, and Price persuades Haversham to take the last. Suddenly a gigantic underwater creature appears. While the smaller creatures follow the two escape pods, the gigantic monster begins to destroy the Roebuck station. Price knows that she will die anyway. It increases the energy level of the meltdown generators so that they explode. The explosion kills all creatures in the area and the escape pods safely reach the surface.

I wear a helmet and it makes it easier for me to straighten my hair when I take it off and on." She has been wearing the boyish style ever since. Stewart went on to explain that the rig was at the bottom of the sea floor.
