Dick Bruna (2007)

Dick Bruna (born August 23, 1927 in Utrecht as Hendrik Magdalenus Bruna ; † February 16, 2017 there ) was a Dutch author, draftsman and graphic designer.

His creations have impressed themselves on many children because they are marketed on a wide variety of objects around the world. His most famous figure is Nijntje (in the German and English translation Miffy ). It's a little rabbit that was drawn with just a few lines and colors. Dick Bruna wrote and drew their stories.

He also illustrated book covers for the AW Bruna & Zoon family publishing house, for example for Commissioner Maigret . They are mostly dominated by the monochrome silhouette of the commissioner's pipe. He also designed countless posters for the publishing house and for other companies, for example in 1974 for Pampers .

biography

Dick Bruna was the son of a man who was to become the largest publisher in the Netherlands. The publisher's success is probably due to the fact that he had a kiosk at almost every train station where his holiday novels were sold.

Father Bruna saw Dick as the successor in the shop. But although he often asked him about it, he had no talent for the financial side of the business. In his place the brother succeeded him and Dick Bruna used his talent elsewhere:

Over the years he has illustrated thousands of books by the publisher, including those by Simon Templar (The Saint) , James Bond and Shakespeare .

Influences

Dick Bruna began to draw at a young age. He illustrated the covers of school newspapers in the style of Walt Disney. Perhaps the greatest influence on his work was Henri Matisse . In the style of this French painter, he made the collages for his first children's book.
