The Battle of Ulrichen was a military confrontation that was fought in 1211 between Duke Berchtold V von Zähringen and the Valais in Obergoms near Ulrichen .
history
Berchtold V, who had founded the city of Bern twenty years earlier (1191) - tried to conquer Valais in 1211 because of disputes with Count Thomas I of Savoy (campaign of revenge) on the one hand and out of a lust for conquest on the other .
He pulled 13,000 men over the Grimsel Pass on impassable paths . The first thing he did was set fire to the two villages of Oberwald VS and Obergesteln . The Valais, led by their bishop of Sitten, Landrich von Mont ( Mund VS ) (1206–1237) expected the enemy at Oberbach on the Obergestlerfelde near Ulrichen.
In the ensuing battle, Berchtold's army was devastated. The remaining small remnants of his force withdrew over the Grimsel . There they were surrounded by persecuting Valais, beaten again and driven into the lake. Since then this lake has also been called the Dead Lake .
A large granite cross commemorates the battle.
