In the 2008 presidential election campaign , Murphy raised funds for Obama after he had not made a decision in the primary election between Hillary Clinton and Obama as a super delegate in the party primary until May 2008 . Murphy worked for his own company Murphy Enterprises for a few months in 2009 . On August 7, 2009, he was confirmed by the US Senate as the United States Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany. On August 21, 2009, he and his family arrived in Berlin. On September 3, 2009, he was accredited when Federal President Horst Köhler accepted Murphy's credentials.

During the term of office as ambassador, the surveillance of Angela Merkel's cell phone in Berlin, which spied on the embassy in Berlin from 2002 to 2013, falls. In the course of the publication of cables from US embassies by WikiLeaks and the press from November 28, 2010 Murphy had to deal with the impact of the affair on German-American relations. The dispatches contained open assessments of German politicians, such as the Chancellor as "Angela Teflon Merkel". Murphy justified the reports as normal diplomatic work. You talk to each other, get to know each other, trust each other, share assessments. He was "incredibly angry" with whoever downloaded the material. His people "did nothing wrong" and he will "apologize for nothing they did". On December 5, 2010, Murphy apologized for the leak. He rejected requests for his recall.

In 2012 Murphy was honored with the Lucius D. Clay Medal of the VDAC in Neuss. The German-American Society Neuss e. V. awarded him honorary membership in the summer of 2013.

In June 2017, Murphy won the Democratic primary for governorship in New Jersey. Murphy therefore competed against Republican Kim Guadagno in November 2017 to succeed Chris Christie and emerged from this election as the winner.

Social Commitment

During his years with Goldman Sachs, Murphy has been a strong contributor to community, community, and charitable causes. He was a member of boards and committees of the civil rights organization National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the Local Initiatives Support Corporation , the Center for American Progress , 180 Turning Lives Around and various programs at the University of Pennsylvania.
