John M. Koenig

John M. Koenig (* 1958 in Tacoma ) is an American diplomat . From 2012 to 2015 he was the United States Ambassador to Cyprus with the rank of Council of Envoys . From 2006 to 2009 he was Deputy Ambassador of the United States to Germany as envoy or chargé d' affaires .

Life

John Koenig studied anthropology at the University of Washington ( Bachelor of Arts ) and foreign relations at Johns Hopkins University ( Master of Arts ). In 1984 he joined the foreign service.

From 1984 to 1985 John M. Koenig was accredited as Vice Consul at the US Embassy in Manila , and from 1985 to 1987 Koenig was accredited at the US Embassy in East Berlin . From 1988 to 1989 Koenig was employed in the East Asia and Pacific Division of the State Department in Washington, DC and in the Situation Center. In 1990, Koenig was Assistant Attorney General of Florida State when his son Ted was born.

From 1990 to 1993 Koenig was accredited at the Jakarta embassy when his son Alexander was born in 1992. From 1994 to 1997 he was accredited at the Embassy in Nicosia , from 1997 to 2000 at the Embassy in Athens . From 2000 to 2003 Koenig was Consul General in Thessaloniki . The US Consulate General organized the “Honored Nation - USA” on the grounds of the Thessaloniki International Fair .

From 2003 to 2006 Koenig was Deputy Ambassador to NATO in Brussels. In Brussels, Koenig campaigned for more engagement in Afghanistan and looked for new NATO partners in the Islamic part of the former Soviet Union. In 2005 he was chargé d'affaires at NATO for five months. During this time, NATO supported the humanitarian intervention of the African Union Mission in Sudan . On August 14, 2006, Koenig became deputy to the Ambassador William Timken in Berlin.

In 2007 John M. Koenig discussed possible long-term negative consequences for the image of German-American relations in the Federal Chancellery if the kidnapping of Khaled al-Masri by the CIA were cleared up. Senior Public Prosecutor August Stern announced that he had “felt compelled by the pressure of the media” to issue the arrest warrants for the kidnappers. The identities of the kidnappers had been determined by journalists.

From September 2009 to 2012 Koenig was political advisor in Naples .
