The Gunnista Cemetery ( English : Gunnista Graveyard ) is a cemetery on the Scottish Shetland island of Bressay . It is located in the small settlement of Gunnista in the northeast of the island. In 1971 Gunnista Cemetery was added to the Scottish List of Monuments in Category B.

history

The Gunnista cemetery is probably the oldest known burial site on Bressay. In the Middle Ages there was also a church dedicated to Saint Olaf at this location, but today only the foundation walls of one side wall can be located. The cemetery was still in use in the early 18th century. The building to the south of the enclosure is a mausoleum of the Henderson of Gardie family , who lived in Gardie House in the west of the island.

description

A dry masonry from quarry stone comprises the rectangular area. Sometimes it ends with semicircular cover plates. The mausoleum, which dates from the 18th century, is the most striking structure within the enclosure wall. The elongated, one-story building is built into the slope and has three vertical window axes on the side surfaces and one on the front sides. Architecturally, it has classicist motifs. The masonry consists of sandstone blocks that rest on a foundation made of rubble. The entrance door is in the middle on the west side. It ends with a segmental arch with a skull and crossbones engraved in the keystone .
