history

Gardie House was built for Magnus Henderson in 1724 . The lands had previously been owned by the family for some time. Henderson wanted the building to be a location for his fish export business. The work was supervised by Forbes, a stonemason from Aberdeen . In 1799 Elizabeth Nicolson , wife of Thomas Mouats , owner of Belmont House , inherited the property from her uncle, James Henderson . Around 1820 the villa was expanded and the front was redesigned. Farm buildings have also been added. From this period it is known that the Scottish poet Walter Scottdined at Gardie House. Gardie House was given its current appearance in 1905 by John Morgan Aitken . The villa is still privately owned. Today Scottish MP and former chairman of the Scottish Liberal Democrats, Tavish Scott, lives there .
