Belmont House
Belmont House is a former mansion in the southwest of the Scottish Shetland island of Unst . In 1971 Belmont House was included in the Scottish Monuments List in the highest category A.
history
Belmont House was built for Thomas Mouat , the son of the local laird . The building, which was completed around 1777, was designed by Mouat himself, who had previously traveled to the Lothian region to familiarize himself with contemporary manor house architecture. The impressions gained were incorporated into both the design of the building and the arrangement of the outbuildings. The entrance gate near the coast is on an axis with Belmont House and the farm behind. The east wing was added in the early 19th century. Except for this, the building is still in unchanged condition today. The Mouats themselves lived in Belmont House until the middle of the 20th century. They then sold the property and the building fabric deteriorated noticeably. Storms in particular contributed to this in the 1990s. It is now owned by the non-profit Belmont Trust , which restored it. It can be rented as a vacation home. Due to its almost unchanged original architecture, Belmont House is one of the most important buildings in terms of architectural history on the Shetland Islands.
