Ariha ( Arabic أريحا, DMG Arīḥā ) is a city in Idlib Governorate in northwestern Syria . According to an estimate in 2013, the city had around 58,380 inhabitants.

history

During the civil war in Syria , the city was the scene of skirmishes between the Syrian Army and the Free Syrian Army for many months . More than 400 residents of the city died in the fighting by March 2013. In August 2012, the insurgents managed to capture around 80% of the city. The city was retaken by government troops in late 2013.

On May 28, 2015, the city and the surrounding villages were completely conquered by the rebel alliance Jaish al-Fatah within 3 hours , according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights .
