Philipp Muntwiler (born February 25, 1987 in Wil SG ) is a Swiss football player who has been under contract with FC Wil since July 1, 2019 .
Career
After his time with his youth club FC Bazenheid, Philipp Muntwiler switched to the offspring of FC Wil. From there, his path led in 2002 to the U18 team of FC St. Gallen, which was then playing in the Super League , and from there to the U21 team there in 2005. After a rather short loan engagement at FC Wil , “Munti”, as he is called by his fans, made it to the first team of FC St. Gallen in the 2005/06 season under coach Ralf Loose and made his first three appearances in the Super League.
In the 2006/07 season Muntwiler developed both playfully and tactically and was used in two thirds of all games (24 of 36 games). Another event set an inglorious climax in this football year: Philipp Muntwiler indirectly decided the Swiss football championship with his outing against FC Zurich on April 1, 2007, as he had been expelled from the field the day before in a game with the U21s and therefore actually was not eligible to play. The sporting department of FC St. Gallen had not turned to the right authority to clarify whether the player could be used or not. Muntwiler was substituted on in the goalless game against FCZ around a quarter of an hour before the end; the disciplinary committee of the Swiss Football League judged the match in retrospect as a 3-0 forfait win for Zurich. FC Zurich subsequently won the championship one point ahead of FC Basel .
In the 2007/08 season , Muntwiler made further progress and secured a regular place in the defensive midfield , at that time under Rolf Fringer . With his successor Krassimir Balakow , however, he rose from the Challenge League . However, this did not affect his engagement in St. Gallen; on the contrary: Muntwiler extended his contract in autumn 2008 prematurely by one year until June 30, 2010. One year after relegation, the FCSG managed to be top-class again for two years. In 2011, however, the eastern Swiss descended again, only to rise again a year later. Muntwiler moved to FC Luzern in summer 2012 .
In September 2013 he switched to the Challenge League on loan to FC Vaduz, where he was promoted to the Swiss Super League at the end of the 2013/14 season . FC Vaduz then signed him definitively in summer 2014. He signed a contract for two years until the summer of 2016 and extended it prematurely by one year to June 2017. In October 2016, he extended his contract again prematurely for another year until the summer of 2018.
