history

Ernst Sutter AG was founded as a family company in 1964 in Teufen, outside Rhodes . However, its roots go back to the village butcher's shop, which Otto and Frieda Sutter took over there in 1909. In 1935 the business passed to their son Ernst Otto Sutter and his wife. While 90 percent of sales were previously achieved over the counter, Ernst Otto Sutter began to increasingly deliver meat. Under his management, the old butcher's premises were replaced by a new building with a shop, cold storage rooms, sausage, smokehouse and slaughterhouse, and Ernst Sutter AG was founded in 1964. Shortly afterwards, Ernst Otto Sutter's son, Ernst Sutter, took over management of the company together with his wife.

In 1976, due to lack of space, the company moved to nearby Gossau in the canton of St. Gallen and moved into its new manufacturing facility there, which was expanded further in the 1980s. During this time, Ernst Sutter AG acquired the butcher's Gemperli AG and continued to run the "Gemperli" brand alongside its own "Suttero" brand. In the early 1990s, the company opened logistics centers in Rothrist, Lausanne and Ticino.

In 2003 Ernst Sutter AG was taken over by the Fenaco-owned Carnavi Holding, in which Fenaco's previous meat activities were combined. As part of a simplification of the corporate structure, the six companies and the parent company Carnavi-Holding were merged to form Ernst Sutter AG at the beginning of 2008.
