Axel Thoma (born September 5, 1964 ) is a former German soccer player and current coach and sports manager.
Career
Thoma grew up in Onstmettingen in Swabia and played at the beginning of his career with the amateurs of VfB Stuttgart . In the 1984/85 season he played two Bundesliga games for the licensed team, in which he scored a goal. He later moved to Switzerland for FC Schaffhausen and FC Winterthur .
After his active career, Thoma was a junior coach and head of sport at FC Winterthur, FC Zurich , Grasshopper Club Zurich , Górnik Zabrze and FC Wil . He was also the assistant coach of the Swiss U17, U18, U19 and U20 national teams . In September 2010 he replaced Ryszard Komornicki , who had asked for a contract termination, as head coach at FC Wil and also continues his dual function as head of sports. In October 2014, Thoma moved to Grasshopper Club Zurich as the sporting director. On May 8, 2015, Thoma was released immediately as head of sports at the Grasshopper Club Zurich.
On March 8, 2016, he became head coach and head of sport in the double-client at FC Schaffhausen in the Challenge League . On February 18, 2019, the previous managing director and head of sport at FC Schaffhausen AG, Axel Thoma, will be released from his duties with immediate effect.
