from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The football game between FC Wil and FC St. Gallen on November 3, 2002 was the highest-scoring game of the NLA (today's Super League ) to date . The FC Wil defeated FC St. Gallen with 11: 3 before 7300 spectators, a record crowd for a home game of FC Wil.

Starting position

Both teams had won their last game. St. Gallen 1: 0 against Aarau and Wil 1: 3 against FC Zurich, while FC St. Gallen has been second to last (eleventh place) and thus on a relegation position for four rounds.

The last meeting of the two clubs in the seventh round of the same season ended in St. Gallen with a 2-2 draw.

FC Wil had to do without goalkeeper Nicolas Beney because of a short-term appendix operation. Marc Zellweger was also absent from FC Wil due to an injury.

Course of the game

St. Gallen took the lead after just under two minutes of play with a goal by the then 18-year-old Tranquillo Barnetta . His failed flank from the right found the direct route into the goal. Shortly afterwards, a St. Gallen corner touched the crossbar from the other side. Nine minutes after the 1-0, Wil was equalized with a remarkable free-kick from Umberto Romano. Five minutes later, Yacouba Bamba scored the opening goal with a 2-1 for the home team. After another crossbar hit by St. Gallen, which bounced back into the game, Naldo scored the 3-1 in the course of the subsequent counterattack. Bamba and Fabinho increased to 5: 1. St. Gallen shortened in the meantime with two goals from Alex Tachie-Mensah and Wolf. Bamba scored another goal for Wil at the break 6: 3.

The second half continued again with numerous goals. Umberto Romano scored his second goal this time with a header. Naldo increased to 8: 3 also with his head. Substitute Felix Mordeku, Mauro Lustrinelli with a penalty and finally Pavlovic with the final result of 11: 3.

Effects

Thanks to the victory, Wil reached the final round, while FC St. Gallen did not manage to qualify for the final round in the remaining rounds of the basic round.

Up to this point in time, FC St. Gallen was the undisputed number one in Eastern Switzerland. The 11: 3 was the first time that Wil could win against St. Gallen. The size of the result shocked many FC St. Gallen officials.

«The team gave up. That hurts. We never expected such a disgrace. We were humiliated and have to go through the books on Monday. "

«How will things go on with St. Gallen, how about you [was the reporter meant] and how about me? I'm not interested in that anyway. And with St. Gallen ... Now let's go home first. "

Eleven days after the game, it emerged that the president of FC Wil Andreas Hafen had embezzled 51 million francs from his employer at the major bank UBS. About 11 million of these went to FC Wil.

The fans of FC Wils traditionally celebrate the 2002 victory with the “11: 3” festival. The game has now achieved legendary status with them.
