BBC Radio 5 Live is the BBC's fifth radio program . It's been on the air since 1990 , originally under the name BBC Radio 5 . Since 2002 there has been a partner station under the name BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra .

During the Second Gulf War of 1990–1991, the BBC broadcast an ongoing news program on BBC Radio 4's VHF frequencies , Radio 4 News FM , to cover the events . The format was adopted by the BBC World Service . It proved so successful that what was then Radio 5 was abandoned and replaced by BBC Radio 5 Live.

The broadcast is from the Quay House in MediaCityUK in Salford .

Radio 5 Live is conceived as a “News and Sports station”, ie as a pure news and information channel with extensive sports coverage . There are also programs with audience participation.

BBC Radio 5 is broadcast live on the former BBC Radio 2 medium-wave frequencies 693 and 909 kHz, also via DAB , via satellite and via live stream on the Internet.

Some stations take over programs from Radio 5 Live: The nighttime program “Up all Night” is also broadcast on the local BBC stations . The BFBS -Network uses for his BFBS Radio 2 among other sports.
