The junior player who came from SSV Margertshausen to the youth department of FC Augsburg continuously developed into a technically good midfielder for the left flank. On November 29, 1979 Trieb made his debut in the German youth team in the qualifying game against Luxembourg for the 1980 UEFA youth tournament in the GDR. He was used at the tournament under DFB coach Dietrich Weise in the three group games in Pirna, Gommern and Braunsbreda in May 1980 against Poland (2: 3), Finland (6: 2) and Romania (0: 1). At club level, he celebrated winning the title in the Bayernliga in 1979/80 with the team from the Rosenaustadion , promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga and on June 20, 1980 in Stuttgart with the FCA against the VfB Stuttgart Amateurs in the final (1: 2- Defeat) for the German amateur championship. In the 2nd Bundesliga group south, 1980/81, Trieb was the only Augsburg player to play all 38 rounds and scored ten goals. The round had started with a 2-2 draw at SV Darmstadt 98 under coach Heinz Elzner , from April 1981 Heiner Schuhmann tried in vain to maintain the league with the FCA. The midfield talent stayed in Augsburg even after relegation to the Bayern League and celebrated his second championship in 1982 and his immediate return to the 2nd Bundesliga . But Trieb was drawn to the Bundesliga and so he accepted the offer from Eintracht Frankfurt and moved to the Main metropolis in Hesse for the 1982/83 round.

Bundesliga, 1982 to 1990

The Austrian Helmut Senekowitsch had replaced Lothar Buchmann as coach in the Frankfurt Waldstadion , but Branko Zebec took over as his successor on August 19, 1982. On the third match day, September 1, 1982, the Augsburg debut in the Bundesliga. The Eintracht took tenth place and Trieb came to 20 Bundesliga appearances with one goal. When Eintracht was threatened with relegation in 1983/84 - coach Zebec was no longer able to exercise his office with the best of strength and ability for health reasons - Dietrich Weise took over the coaching position on October 30, 1983. Trieb came to 31 missions and the way-Elf saved as 16th in the table in the relegation games against MSV Duisburg. Trieb belonged to the team that brought about relegation for Eintracht in two games on June 1 and 5, 1984 against the "Zebras" with a 5-0 away win and a 1-1 home draw. After another 39 Bundesliga games and three hits, he ended his career in Frankfurt after the 1985/86 round and joined the Palatinate Bundesliga club SV Waldhof Mannheim.

In the last round of coach Klaus Schlappner , 1986/87, Waldhof came in 14th and Trieb had contributed to it by 28 appearances with two goals. After the “Schlappi” era, the Waldhof trusted the Austrian trainer Felix Latzke . Trieb belonged to the core of the regular cast with 30 league games and three hits, but only the 16th place came out. Waldhof was only able to put the league into practice by relegating against SV Darmstadt 98 - Klaus Schlappner swung the coaching scepter for the "Lilien". Trieb was Waldhof active in the decisive third game on June 9, 1988 in Saarbrücken. After a goalless draw after extra time, the Waldhöfer prevailed on penalties with 5: 4 goals and were thus able to remain in the Bundesliga.

When Waldhof and coach Günter Sebert were unable to prevent Bundesliga relegation in the 1989/90 season, Trieb only had one substitution in the preliminary round on August 26, 1989 in a 1-0 home win against Bayern Munich. He moved to South Baden during the winter changeover period and joined SC Freiburg in the Dreisam Stadium in the 2nd Bundesliga. On December 9, 1989 he made his debut with the Breisgau-Elf. At the side of fellow players Andreas Buck , Oliver Schäfer , Andreas and Michael Zeyer , he completed 14 games and scored a goal for the sports club, which ended the round in 13th place in the table.

Trieb returned to FC Augsburg for two rounds in 1990, before ending his high-class playing career at TSV Haunstetten in September 1992 .
