Thomas Cichon (* 9. July 1976 in Ruda Slaska , Poland as Tomasz Cichoń ) is a former German football player and current football coach of Polish origin.

Career

The defender, who tied his football boots for various Essen clubs in his youth , played in the 1. FC Köln jersey for nine years and experienced all the ups and downs of the club, including several promotions and relegations. During this time he worked under the trainers Morten Olsen , Stephan Engels , Peter Neururer , Lorenz-Günther Köstner , Bernd Schuster , Ewald Lienen , Christoph John , Friedhelm Funkel and Marcel Koller . He made history with his only Bundesliga goal when he scored the 1-1 draw against Hertha BSC in March 2002. It was the end of 1034 minutes without a goal for 1. FC Köln, a Bundesliga record that still exists today.

After the 2003/04 season, his contract with 1. FC Köln was no longer renewed, and he then moved to Rot-Weiß Oberhausen , which, however, relegated to the regional league at the end of the season and Cichon only played there for one season.

In 2005 he moved to Panionios Athens in Greece , but returned to Germany in January 2006 and played for VfL Osnabrück . After initial difficulties, he was dismissed as a wrong purchase, Thomas Cichon developed into a defensive guarantor and leading player of VfL Osnabrück in the 2006/07 season. At the end of the season you could qualify for the 2nd Bundesliga. After relegation in summer 2009, he left the club.

In order to find a new employer, Cichon presented himself in the summer of 2009 at the training of the association of contract football players . On September 2, 2009 he finally signed a contract with the South African club Moroka Swallows from Johannesburg , where he played under coach Rainer Zobel . After Cichon was no longer considered by Zobel's successor Gordon Igesund , he ended his career in January 2011 and moved back to the Ruhr area. He deliberately leaves his exact place of residence in the dark.

Since the beginning of the 2013/14 season, Cichon has been training the E1 juniors of the Essen district club Preußen Eiberg.

In the meantime, Thomas Cichon has been installed as the coach of the men's team at SV Preußen Eiberg, where he has been working since 2016.

Suspected manipulation

After the confession of a defendant and the testimony of his former teammate Marcel Schuon in the trial of illegal betting and match manipulation before the Bochum district court, Cichon was suspected of being involved in the betting scandal. Both claim that Cichon was involved in the manipulation agreements of games to the detriment of VfL Osnabrück. In the run-up to the process, Cichon had already admitted to having had contact with the betting mafia, but has so far always refused personal involvement. In June 2012, the Bochum public prosecutor brought charges. The charges included: tax evasion, aiding and abetting fraud and aiding a criminal organization. In June 2014, Cichon confessed to having participated in the manipulation. The Bochum regional court sentenced him to nine months probation. Cichon was banned from the DFB sports court in October 2013 for two years.
