François-Xavier Fabre

François-Xavier Fabre (born April 1, 1766 in Montpellier , Département Hérault ; † March 16, 1837 ibid) was a French painter, draftsman, etcher and art collector.

As a master student of Jacques Louis David , Fabre was able to take part in the major exhibition of the Salon de Paris in 1787 . He was awarded the Prix ​​de Rome by the Académie des Beaux-Arts ; this price included u. a. a generous study visit to the Villa Medici in Rome .

From Rome, Fabre traveled to southern Italy in 1793 and stayed in Naples for a long time . Around 1800 he accepted a position at the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno ( art academy ) in Florence and taught there as a professor until 1826. When his partner Luise zu Stolberg-Gedern died in January of this year , he gradually resigned all offices and obligations. The legacy of Luise zu Stolberg-Gedern, mainly a large collection of works of art, Fabre bequeathed to the city of Florence.

In 1826 Fabre returned to France and settled in his hometown. There founded a museum, an art school and a public library; These foundations were generously endowed with the private Fabre collections. During the Second Restoration , Fabre was raised to the nobility (baron). François-Xavier Fabre died in Montpellier on March 16, 1837, 14 days before his 71st birthday.

Fabre's paintings consist of historical representations and landscapes with historical staffage; they belong to the classical direction. Many are in the possession of the Musée Fabre in Montpellier, which is named after him . The Louvre is home to the painting Philoctetes on Lemnos .
