André Hofschneider (born June 10, 1970 in Berlin ) is a former German soccer player and today's soccer coach . Most recently he was the head coach of 1. FC Union Berlin .

Career as a player

Via the youth stations Turbine EKB Berlin and 1. FC Union Berlin , Hofschneider got into the squad of 1. FC Union for the 1988/89 season and made his debut on December 3, 1988 at the age of 18 in the league . In the same season Hofschneider completed five more missions for Union in the major league, but the club rose from bottom of the table in the second-rate league . In 1989 Hofschneider was appointed to the GDR's Olympic soccer team, with which he played several test matches. Even before the start of the qualifying games for the 1992 Olympics, the team was withdrawn in the course of German reunification .

In 1990/91 the defensive player, who had meanwhile become a top performer, achieved relegation to the first all-German season of the 2nd Bundesliga with Union , but the club only qualified for the Oberliga Nordost as one of the third-highest German leagues . 1993/94 Hofschneider achieved promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga with Union; However, the club was refused permission to play for economic reasons, whereupon Hofschneider moved to the second division Hansa Rostock .

In Rostock, Hofschneider was initially unable to assert himself in 1994/95 and only made 15 missions in his first season at Hansa, in which the club was promoted to the Bundesliga as the league table . In the following season 1995/96 Hofschneider finished sixth in the final table with Hansa, but again played only 15 games. 1996/97 Hofschneider became a top performer of the Hanseatic League, threatened with relegation this season, and played 28 missions before moving to Bundesliga rivals TSV 1860 Munich at the end of the season. There Hofschneider could not prevail again with 12 missions in the 1997/98 season and at the end of the season moved on to the first division relegated Arminia Bielefeld .

Hofschneider became a top performer in Bielefeld, completed 33 missions in 1998/99 and rose with the Arminen, as with Rostock, as the league leader in the Bundesliga. There he could not prevent the relegation of Bielefeld in 1999/2000 with 22 missions and came in the following second division seasons 2000/01 and 2001/02 only to 19 and seven missions respectively.

In 2002 Hofschneider went to regional league club FC Augsburg , for whom he played 27 appearances in 2002/03 . After just one more assignment for Augsburg in 2003/04 , Hofschneider let his career end with the lower-class Bavarian clubs FC Affing and DJK Augsburg-Lechhausen .

Career as a coach

In the 2007/08 season Hofschneider returned as an assistant coach to his former club 1. FC Union Berlin . At the same time, he completed further training as a fitness and event manager .

In the second half of the 2015/16 season he initially represented the sick head coach Sascha Lewandowski on an interim basis . After Lewandowski's contract was terminated due to a burnout syndrome in early March 2016, Hofschneider took over the position of head coach until the end of the season. In June 2016 he was replaced by Jens Keller and began training as a football teacher. Hofschneider completed his training as a football teacher at the Hennes-Weisweiler Academy and received the UEFA Pro license on March 20, 2017 .

After Jens Keller was released at the beginning of December 2017, Hofschneider was introduced as the new head coach of Union Berlin. He received a contract until June 30, 2019. However, the collaboration was terminated after the 2017/18 season and Hofschneider's contract was terminated. Already in September 2018 the iron men brought him back and hired him as head coach of the club's own youth training center.
