Dieter Rombach

Hans Dieter Rombach (born June 6, 1953 in Herbolzheim ) is a German computer scientist . He has been professor for software engineering at the Technical University of Kaiserslautern since 1992 . In 1996 he founded the Fraunhofer Institute for Experimental Software Engineering IESE in Kaiserslautern and was its managing director until the end of 2014. From 2015 to 2018 he was Director of Business Development at Fraunhofer IESE and Chairman of the Board of Science Alliance Kaiserslautern. Dieter Rombach is also a member of the Society for Computer Science and a Fellow of the ACM (since 2010) and the IEEE Computer Society (since 2003).

Life

Dieter Rombach studied mathematics and computer science in Karlsruhe; In 1984 he received his doctorate in computer science in Kaiserslautern . From 1986 to 1991 he was a professor at the University of Maryland and a project manager at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in the USA. From 1992 to 2018 he held the chair for software engineering in the computer science department at the Technical University of Kaiserslautern . He also founded the Fraunhofer Institute for Experimental Software Engineering (Fraunhofer IESE) in Kaiserslautern in 1996 and was its managing director until the end of 2014 and then until 2018 director of the business development department. On October 1, 2018, Professor Dieter Rombach retired. Since then, he has continued to work as Senior Research Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the TU Kaiserslautern, as Chairman of the Science and Innovation Alliance (SIAK) in Kaiserslautern, and as Chief Digital Officer (CDO) of the City of Kaiserslautern. In addition, Dieter Rombach works as a consultant for various German and international companies as well as Fraunhofer IESE. From 2006 to the end of 2009 he headed the Fraunhofer Group for Information Communication Technology. From 2001 to 2006 he was also visiting professor in the Computer Science Department of the University of New South Wales , Sydney, Australia. Over the years, Rombach has declined several calls (including to the Vienna University of Technology).

Research priorities

Rombach's main research interests are in the area of software engineering , especially in engineering methods for developing software with predictable quality; quantitative methods for measuring and evaluating software products and processes for the purpose of project management and quality assurance; Languages, methods and tools for creating and managing development processes on the basis of explicit software process models; as well as empirical methods and their application to determine the effects of software development methods.

Dieter Rombach is the author of more than 250 scientific publications.

Awards

  • In 1990 Dieter Rombach received the US $ 500,000 Presidential Young Investigator Award from the National Science Foundation in the USA for his outstanding work in the field of software engineering.
  • In 2000 he received the Order of Merit of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate for his contributions to the state's scientific and economic development.
  • In 2003 he received the Distinguished Postdoctoral Award from the University of Maryland's College for Computer, Mathematical and Physical Sciences.
  • In 2009, the Finnish University of Oulu honored him with an honorary doctorate for his life's work as a software engineer .
  • In 2009 he was awarded the Cross of Merit on Ribbon of the Federal Republic of Germany.
  • In 2013 he received the Founders Award from Fraunhofer CESE (Center for Experimental Software Engineering).
  • In 2013, Dieter Rombach was awarded the Fraunhofer Medal for his services to the Fraunhofer Society .

Others

  • From November 26, 2007, Rombach held a seat on the supervisory board of the 1. FC Kaiserslautern soccer club , and since December 4, 2008, he has been chairman of this body. On December 12, 2015, Rombach resigned from his supervisory board mandate after the general meeting had not given him discharge. At the FCK annual general meeting on November 12, 2016, Dieter Rombach was refused discharge for the 2015/16 financial year.
