John Kirwan (soccer player)
John Henry "Jack" Kirwan (born February 9, 1878 in County Wicklow , Ireland , † January 7, 1959 in London ) was an Irish football player and coach .
Club career
player
Kirwan began his career as a Gaelic football player with Dublin GAA , with whom he was able to win the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship in 1894 before he finally switched to football. His first stop in England was Southport Central in the Lancashire League before joining Everton FC in 1898 . There he played only one season, however, and moved to Tottenham Hotspur in the Southern League in 1899 , with which he was able to win the FA Cup in 1901 . In 1905 he moved to Chelsea in the Second Division and in 1907 achieved promotion with Chelsea. In 1908 he left Chelsea and played a year each at Clyde and Leyton Orient before ending his career as a player.
baseball
In addition to soccer, Kirwan also played successfully baseball for Tottenham and was part of the team that won the 1906 English baseball championship. From 1911 until the outbreak of World War I , he coached the Ajax Amsterdam baseball team in addition to the soccer team .
Trainer
He was the first professional coach of the Dutch soccer team Ajax Amsterdam , which he coached from 1910 to 1915. He achieved promotion to the top division with Ajax in 1911. After the outbreak of the First World War he returned to the island. In 1923 he went to Italy for a year and coached AS Livorno .
National team
Between February 24, 1900 and March 15, 1909, Kirwan played 17 international matches for the Irish team , in which he scored two goals. Kirwan was part of the team that won the first Irish victory against Scotland on March 21, 1903 .
