Oyem is the capital of the Woleu-Ntem province in northern Gabon . With around 60,685 inhabitants (2013) it is also the fifth largest city in the country. It is located on a plateau about 900 meters above sea level, a good 30 kilometers east of the border with Equatorial Guinea and almost 80 kilometers south of the border with Cameroon . The city has a hospital, a market and an airport. Agriculture is the most important economic factor.

history

From October 1912 to the First World War , the place was named Ojem and was the location of the 10th Company of the Imperial Protection Force for Cameroon and the seat of the German district of Wolö-Ntem .

Oyem was one of four venues for the 2017 African Cup of Nations in Gabon.
