Roger Couard (born August 25, 1912 in El Achir , Algeria , † March 31, 1999 ) was a French football player .

Career

The 175 centimeter tall striker Couard grew up in French-occupied Algeria; his brother Raymond Couard later also took up the profession of football player. To graduate from school, he went to the city of Algiers and began playing football with the team at his high school. At the same time he met Albert Camus , who became a good friend of his family. From 1931 on, Couard ran for the Racing Universitaire club in the same city; so he belonged to a nationally successful team that not only won the Algerian championship several times, but also became North African champion in 1935 . In the same year, the footballer, who had also acquired a law degree as a student, had to leave his Algerian homeland because he had to do his military service in France.

When he came to France in 1935, he was signed by the first division team Racing Paris and thus made the leap into professional football . At Paris he was set as a goalscorer and justified this with 23 goals in 22 games in his first season. In addition to a third place on the list of goalscorers, he achieved the win of the French championship title in 1936. In addition, his team had made it into the national cup final in 1936 ; in the final against FCO Charleville Couard scored the only goal and thus secured his club the double of championship and cup victory. This was followed by two seasons, in which he was still relatively successful in front of goal with 22 and 13 goals respectively, but he could not build on the previous successes with the team. In addition, at this stage of his career he had to contend with a knee injury that temporarily prevented him from playing football.

In 1938 he moved to the first division competitor Le Havre AC . Despite a regular place, he could not find his goal danger again with the northern French and did not get more than five hits. The beginning of the Second World War in 1939 caused the game to be interrupted; Couard's professional career ended after 105 first division games with 63 goals. After the war he returned to Algeria.
