The Stade Raymond-Kopa is a football stadium in Angers , France , capital of the Maine-et-Loire department in the Pays de la Loire region . It is used as a venue by the SCO Angers football club .

history

The stadium opened in 1912 under the name Stade Bessonneau , named after the French industrialist Julien Bessonneau . In 1925 it was renovated and named after the athlete Jean Bouin . The next renovation took place in 1957. The athletics facility around the field was removed and the first Saint Leonard grandstand was built. Now it had space for more than 21,000 spectators.

After SCO Angers rose to the first division , the stadium was completely renovated in 1993 and the Colombier grandstand was built. Due to safety regulations, the capacity was reduced to 17,000 places at the end of the 1990s. Today the stadium can accommodate 18,000 spectators after a renovation of the Coubertin grandstand in 2010. The attendance record dates back to April 26, 1969, when Olympique Marseille visited SCO Angers in front of 22,989 spectators.

According to plans, they wanted to build a new Stade Jean-Bouin . With a size of 20,000 to 25,000 spectators, it should be completed in 2015. However, these plans were given up for the time being. In mid-March 2017, a few days after the death of Raymond Kopa , who began his professional career at SCOA and later had a permanent residence in the city, the city administration proposed the name change to Stade Raymond-Kopa in mid-March 2017 . On March 27, 2017, the renaming of the venue was officially completed after the approval of the Maine-et-Loire municipal council.
