IF Saab is a Swedish sports club from Linköping . The club is best known for its handball and football departments , each of which competed in the top Swedish league (in handball: Elitserien ).

history

IF Saab was founded on July 8, 1941 by employees of the Swedish Saab group. In the 1950s to 1970s, the handball team was one of the most important teams in Sweden and won the Swedish championship in 1968, 1973 and 1974. In August 1995 the department separated from the main club and re-founded as HF Linköpings Lejon .

In 1973, the football team played one season in the Allsvenskan , but as bottom of the table, relegation was missed. The direct resurgence was narrowly missed as runner-up in Division 2 Norra behind GIF Sundsvall . In the following years, the team occupied only places in the midfield. In 1978, the club had to go into the third division as the table penultimate of Division 2 Södra 1978. There, too, the class could not be held and the club had to compete in the fourth division. In 1981 the football department merged with the footballers from BK Derby to Linköpings FF to form a powerful club in Linköping.
