Private pressing

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A private pressing is a sound carrier , usually a record or compact disc , that was produced by the producer on his own behalf.

The producer can either be the artist or the group involved, a company not active in the music business, or another private person. Private pressings are mostly produced for documentation or advertising purposes.

Since the editions of private pressings are relatively small (rarely more than 1000 copies), the covers usually have a very individual design and the sound carriers are not or have not been distributed via commercial channels and are therefore difficult to obtain, they often have the status of a rarity among collectors .

Robbery is to be distinguished from private pressings, see Bootlegs .
