Naoki Sanjūgo

Naoki Sanjūgo ( Japanese 直 木 三 十五 , real name: Uemura Sōichi ( 植 村 宗 一 ); * February 12, 1891 in Andōji-machi, Minami-ku (today: Chūō-ku ), Osaka ; † February 24, 1934 in of Tokyo ) was a Japanese writer.

Life

Naoki studied English literature at Waseda University in Tokyo, but without obtaining a degree. After failed attempts to set up his own business as a publisher, he returned to Osaka after the Kanto earthquake in 1923. Here he worked for the publishing house Platon as editor of the monthly magazine Kuraku ( 苦 楽 ).

During this time his first literary works were created. In 1927 he returned to Tokyo to concentrate fully on his writing. His historical novel Yui Kongen Taisakki ( 由 比 根 元 大 殺 記 ) was serialized in a weekly magazine in 1929, and with Nangoku Taiheiki ( 南国 太平 記 ) he established himself as an author of popular entertainment literature.

Between the ages of 31 and 35, Naoki changed his stage name several times. a. he published critical articles under the name Sanju-ichi . In addition to historical novels such as Araki Mataemon ( 荒木 又 右衛門 ) and Odoriko Gyōjōki ( 踊 子 行 状 記 ), he also wrote biographies of historical figures such as Kusunoki Masashige , Ashikaga Takauji and Genkurō Yoshitsune .

After Naoki's death, Kikuchi Kan donated the Naoki Prize in 1935 . This literary prize, the most important next to the Akutagawa Prize , is awarded to young authors in the field of popular entertainment literature.
