The results of the Reichstag election by constituency. The numbering of the constituencies corresponds to that in the table.

The Reichstag election in February 1867 was the election for the constituent Reichstag . This body was supposed to help prepare the North German Confederation as a federal state.

The main election took place on February 12, 1867; the necessary run-off elections followed in the following weeks . For the election, the states of the August Alliance were divided into 297 constituencies, 236 of which were in Prussia . The kingdoms of Bavaria and Württemberg , the Grand Duchy of Baden and the southern part of the Grand Duchy of Hesse did not belong to the August Alliance and therefore did not take part in the election. After the constituent Reichstag had discussed and decided on the constitution of the North German Confederation, the election for the first Reichstag of the North German Confederation followed in August 1867 .

Overall result of the elections

The supporters of Otto von Bismarck's policies , i.e. free conservatives , national liberals and old liberals , received a clear majority of the seats. In the provinces of Schleswig-Holstein and Hanover annexed by Prussia in 1866 , federal constitutional candidates achieved electoral successes. The Saxon People's Party , a forerunner organization of the later Social Democrats , entered parliament with two members.

Due to the incomplete documentation of the voting results, there is no traditional breakdown of the overall result according to votes and percentages in the specialist literature. The following table shows the number of MPs elected for the individual parties, as listed in the contemporary Reichstag handbooks.

Elected MPs by constituency

In each of the 297 constituencies, a member of parliament was elected by absolute majority voting. If no candidate achieved an absolute majority in the first ballot, a runoff election was held between the two best-placed candidates. The following tables show the elected representatives and their party status in the Reichstag.
