The Amt Varel was an administrative district of the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg and the later Free State of Oldenburg . The seat of the office was in Varel . The function of the Oldenburg offices largely corresponded to the function of the districts in the rest of the German Empire .

history

The Varel office was formed as part of the Oldenburg administrative reform of 1814 and initially only comprised Varel and the surrounding area.

In 1856 the office was formally divided into the city of Varel and the rural community of Varel. The city of Varel received the status of a city of the first order in 1858, thus leaving office and becoming a city free of office. In 1858 the municipalities of Zetel and Bockhorn were added from the dissolved Bockhorn to the Varel. In 1867, parts of Bockhorn and Zetel were used to set up the new Neuchâtel community . In 1868 the municipalities of Jade and Schweiburg were added from the dissolved office of Rastede to the office of Varel.

During the administrative reform of 1933, the Varel office was dissolved. Most of the office came to the office of Friesland , Jade and Schweiburg came to the office of Wesermarsch . In 1939, the Oldenburg offices were renamed to districts.
