Free association

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Free Association was a parliamentary group in the Reichstag of the North German Confederation .

history

In the Reichstag of the North German Confederation, several Catholic MPs united with a number of independent liberal MPs to form the Free Association. The parliamentary group stood in opposition to Otto von Bismarck's policy , who advocated a small German solution under Prussian leadership. In the vote on the constitution of the North German Confederation, some parliamentary group members voted no.

In the election for the constituent Reichstag in February 1867, the Free Association won 14 seats. In the election for the First Ordinary Reichstag of the North German Confederation in August 1867, 13 seats were won.

After the founding of the Center Party in 1870, the foundation for a Catholic-Liberal parliamentary group no longer existed, as the Catholic members of the Reichstag now had their own political home. Independent liberal MPs continued to belong to most of the days of the German Empire .
