Izumi Maki

Izumi Maki ( Japanese 真 木 和 , Maki Izumi, after marriage Izumi Yamaoka ( 山岡 和 , Yamaoka Izumi ); born December 10, 1968 in Namikata , Ehime Prefecture ; † October 18, 2018 in Minō , Osaka Prefecture ) was a Japanese long-distance runner .

Life

In 1991 she was the fastest local in the Japanese championship over 10,000 m and came in 20th place at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo over the same distance.

The following year, she set a national record over 10,000 m with 31: 40.38 minutes, became national champion and took 12th place at the Olympic Games in Barcelona .

In 1993, starting again over 10,000 m, she did not go beyond 17th place at the World Championships in Stuttgart . A month later, she set a world record in the 20,000-meter run with 1:06:48.8 hours .

In the following years she finally turned to longer distances. In 1994 she won the Gold Coast Marathon half marathon . In 1995 she was the first to cross the finish line at the Sapporo Half Marathon , but was disqualified for doping and banned for three months.

With a victory at the Nagoya Marathon in 1996, she qualified for the marathon of the Olympic Games in Atlanta , in which she was twelfth.

Then she ended her athletic career and became a trainer. She married in 2003 and some time later gave birth to a son.

Izumi Maki started for the Wacoal corporate team . She was on the advisory board of the Fujita Running Academy of her former coach Nobuyuki Fujita.

Maki died of breast cancer at the age of 49 .
