Albert Hänel (born June 10, 1833 in Leipzig , † May 12, 1918 in Kiel ) was a German lawyer , constitutional lawyer and liberal politician ( Schleswig-Holstein Liberal Party , German Progressive Party and Liberal Association ).

Life

Albert Hänel was the son of the medical professor Albert Friedrich Hänel (1800–1833) and a nephew of the legal historian Gustav Friedrich Hänel . His mother, the women's rights activist Iduna Hänel, married the writer Heinrich Laube after the early death of his father . Hänel grew up in a culturally and politically open-minded family in Vienna, Leipzig and at Muskau Castle with Hermann von Pückler-Muskau . After finishing school at the humanistic Thomas School in Leipzig , he studied at the universities of Leipzig , Vienna and Heidelberg .

In Leipzig he was promoted to Dr. jur. PhD. In the following year he received his habilitation and was appointed private lecturer . His teachers included Robert von Mohl and Karl Georg von Wächter . In 1860 went to the Albertus University in Königsberg as associate professor ; for two years he was appointed full professor . In 1863 he followed the call of the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel . In 1892/93 he was its rector . In his rectorate speech, he dealt with the empire .

Hänel published some important works on German legal history . He rejected legal positivism .

On the occasion of the inauguration of the Kiel City Hall on November 12, 1911, Hänel was made an honorary citizen of the city. He died four weeks before his 85th birthday and was buried in the Südfriedhof (Kiel) . Hänel was married to Bertha von Hoßtrup (1814–1902). She was a widowed daughter of Gerhard von Hoßtrups . His coat of arms shows a strutting rooster struck by an arrow. Most of his estate was destroyed, with only a few remains - including a collection of obituaries, coffin bows and numerous documents are in the specialist library of the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel .

politics

In addition to his teaching activities, Hänel was also politically active, initially as a member of the Schleswig-Holstein Liberal Party, which he left after the liberation and annexation of the Duchies of Schleswig and Holstein by the Kingdom of Prussia . With friends he founded a Liberal Association , which he represented in the Prussian House of Representatives and in the Reichstag of the North German Confederation in 1867 . As a member of the German Progressive Party , Hänel was also a member of the Reichstag of the German Empire from 1871 . There he was elected Vice President in 1874, and in 1876 he took on the same function in the Prussian House of Representatives. In the Progressive Party and later in the German Liberal Party , which had emerged from a merger with the Liberal Association in 1884 , Hänel developed into a decisive opponent of the party leader Eugen Richter . In contrast to him, he tried, among other things, to reach an understanding with the National Liberals . When the German Liberal Party broke up in 1893, Hänel did not join the Richter's Liberal People's Party , but the Liberal Association around Heinrich Rickert and Theodor Barth .

The interpellation by Hänel , introduced in the Prussian House of Representatives in 1880, asked how the Prussian State Ministry responded to the demands of the anti-Semite petition and whether a restriction of the rights of Jews was intended.
