Wilhelm Seelig

Wilhelm Seelig (born June 2, 1821 in Kassel , † July 31, 1906 in Kiel ) was a German political scientist and left-liberal politician.

Life

He studied at the Philipps University in Marburg , at the Ruprecht Karls University in Heidelberg (with Karl Heinrich Rau ) and the Friedrich Wilhelms University in Berlin . He was a member of the Corps Hasso-Nassovia (1840) and Hanseatia Heidelberg (1841) and was one of the founders of Vandalia Heidelberg in 1842 . With a still on Latin written dissertation about the financial system Jean-Baptiste Colbert , he was at the Georg-August University of Göttingen to Dr. phil. PhD . First he was a private lecturer , then an associate professor for political science in Göttingen . In 1853 he moved to the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg and a year later to the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel . There he taught economics, finance and statistics for 52 years. He mainly devoted himself to customs issues and tried to use statistical analyzes to promote the expansion of the German Customs Union . In 1895/96 he was rector of the CAU. From 1866 to 1868 he was also the head of the statistical office for Holstein.

He belonged to the first Reichstag of the German Empire . After a hiatus, he was re-elected to parliament in 1890. From 1873 to 1893 he was also a member of the Prussian House of Representatives , in which he represented the constituency of Kiel. He was an opponent of the Prussian annexation of Schleswig-Holstein . He belonged to the German Progressive Party and later to the German Liberal Party .

Extensive studies have been carried out on his and his family's social life in Kiel . The Hamburg lawyer and author Geert Seelig was his son.

In his free time, Seelig occupied himself with the subjects of horticulture and pomology. The apple variety Dr. Seelig's orange pepping. A square is named after him on the university campus in Kiel.
