The results of the Reichstag election by constituency. The numbering of the constituencies corresponds to that in the table.

The Reichstag election in August 1867 was the election for the first ordinary Reichstag of the North German Confederation . The main election took place on August 31, 1867; the necessary run-off elections followed in the following weeks . The member states of the North German Confederation were divided into 297 constituencies for the election, 236 of which were in Prussia . The kingdoms of Bavaria and Württemberg , the Grand Duchy of Baden and the southern part of the Grand Duchy of Hesse did not belong to the North German Confederation and therefore did not take part in the election. In February 1867, the election for the constituent Reichstag of the North German Confederation had already taken place.

Overall result

The turnout was significantly lower than in the election for the constituent Reichstag . The political balance of power remained essentially unchanged, so that the supporters of Otto von Bismarck's policies maintained their majority. The split in liberalism was confirmed by the election result and the subsequent formation of factions in the Reichstag. The East Elbe provinces of Prussia remained a stronghold of the conservatives. In the provinces of Schleswig-Holstein and Hanover annexed by Prussia in 1866 , federal constitutional candidates achieved electoral successes.

With the Saxon People's Party , the General German Workers' Association and the Lassallesche General German Workers' Association , three workers' parties were represented in parliament. In contrast to the subsequent Reichstag election in 1871 , political Catholicism remained insignificant in this election .

Due to the incomplete documentation of the voting results, there is no traditional breakdown of the overall result according to votes and percentages in the specialist literature. The following table shows the number of MPs elected for the individual parties, as listed in the contemporary Reichstag handbooks.

Political Direction Political party Seats
conservative Conservative Party (KP) 66 (+7)
Free Conservative Association (FKV) 34 (−5)

total 297

1) Not to be confused with the center faction in the Reichstag of the German Empire

Elected MPs by constituency

In each of the 297 constituencies, a member of parliament was elected by absolute majority voting. If no candidate achieved an absolute majority in the first ballot, a runoff election was held between the two best-placed candidates. The following tables show the elected representatives and their party status in the Reichstag.

In the course of the legislative period, the strength of the individual parliamentary groups changed several times due to by-elections and changes in parliamentary groups.

Customs Parliament

From 1868 to 1870, all members of the North German Reichstag were also members of the German Customs Parliament , the parliament of the German Customs Union . In addition, there were 85 South German members of the Customs Parliament who were elected in February and March 1868 in Bavaria, Württemberg, Baden and Hesse using the same suffrage as that of the North German Confederation.
