August Moritz Ludwig Heinrich Wilhelm von Bernuth (born March 11, 1808 in Münster , † April 25, 1889 in Berlin ) was a Prussian minister of state and justice .

Life

August was a son of the Prussian Higher Regional Court President in Münster Karl von Bernuth (1774–1843) and his wife Luise, born Freiin von der Recke (1787–1862) from the house of Uentrop . The later Prussian major general Fritz von Bernuth (1819–1906) was his younger brother.

career

He studied from 1825 to 1828 in Göttingen and Berlin law . He then worked as a judge in Westphalia . These included positions at the Dorsten regional and municipal court and at the higher regional court in Paderborn . In 1845 von Bernuth was appointed to the Upper Tribunal in Berlin as a research assistant . In 1849, von Bernuth was appointed lecturing councilor in the Prussian Ministry of Justice. At the same time he became a member of the first chamber of the Prussian state parliament . In this function he took part in the discussions on the constitutional revision and took a liberal standpoint. In 1855 von Bernuth was appointed Vice President of the Court of Appeal in Glogau . Four years later he was President of the Roll Call Court in Poznan . In the autumn of 1860, von Bernuth was appointed crown syndic and lifelong member of the manor house . During the new era , he was Minister of Justice from 1860 . He resigned with the entire cabinet in March 1862. Von Bernuth belonged to the liberal faction in the manor house . During the constitutional conflict he took a decidedly liberal position. At times he was vice president of the manor between 1875 and 1877. From 1867 until his death, von Bernuth belonged first to the North German Reichstag and later to the German Reichstag . In the Reichstag of the North German Confederation von Bernuth belonged to the faction of the Old Liberal Center, from 1871 to 1874 he was a member of the faction of the Liberal Reich Party and after its dissolution in 1874 joined the National Liberal faction .

Bernuth married Marie Delhaes (1820–1863) on August 24, 1839, with whom he had the following children:

August von Bernuth died in Berlin in 1889 at the age of 81 and was buried in the Old St. Matthew Cemetery in Schöneberg . The grave has not been preserved.
